Installation impressions

individual application research

A homeless guy from china, who got famous in fashion world for    his "look" and attitude. Next to it is a piece of D&G, inspired by him. Also Vivienne Westwood had a collection inspired by homeless people.

NAME OF THE INSTALLATION: Disposable
GROUP: plastic fantastic

The installation work is constructed from disposable common object(s) of everyday life. By transforming an ordinary object, a plastic cup, into a visual and physical installation and using it in a new context we are changing the meaning of the original object. The installation uncover unexpected qualities of the material. It invites to look closer for the most obvious things which we take granted for.

Transforming the plastic cup into a hexagram to create hyperbolic space we’re presenting the growing consuption of plastics. Like hyperbolic space the over-comsuption of disposable materials is increasing: in terms of infinity the use of material is expanding and growing. We are culturally drawn to certain habits that do not promote sustainable lifestyles. ”a pattern of over-consumption leads to inevitable environmental degradation and the eventual loss of resource bases.” (Wikipedia) Plastic is a material that should not be taken for granted nor to be used careless in disposable objects. With our work we are questioning if these every-day materials should be appreciated more and to be used more effictively?

Plastic is present every where in our surroundings; we’re so used to plastic that we don’t notice it or appreciate it. It’s every where in our environment, even so much that it has become a natural thing for us. Our society is depended on plastic and it’s impossible for to live with out it. Plastic cups used for the final installation are made of Polypropylene which is one of the most common plastics used today. PP is a type of fibre which is mainly plastic but can also be found as fabric. It has a high hardness, strength and consistency compared to other plastics yet it’s still light. Because it’s imperishable character it’s a material that the world ’s literally built around. Polymer is also used in the Australian banknotes.

The original inspiration came from nature; honeycombs which bees naturally produce when they are storing in the gathered nectar are hyperbolic. The six sided combs are connected on the sides and the saddle points to each other and if not fixed together could be moved into any direction. Bees are able to build and adapt their honeycombs to any shape and it makes surfaces of their beehives very flexible. Also the principle of a nearly infinite possibility of growth in any direction reflects the hyperbolic form. The character of the installation reminiscent of geological or biological forms mimicking the way of nature, the way things grow. Its has a subtle character: gentle waves that suggest an artificial surface that mimics nature. It’s natural but artificial at the same time.

We are creating a form which is transformative to show the different sides of the use of plastic. Creating a 3d space that is interactive and changeable we want to show the variety of the use of plastic and bring attencion to its negative and positive sides. Our aim is to create a surrounding and tranformative closed space to visualise how we’re surrounded by plastic. The installation work invites closer looking and bigger thinking about the everyday materials that surround us. Transparency of the object is our relation to plastic: we know we’re consuming it but we don’t acknowledge the consiquenses.
