one liter of light in a plastic bottle and a house made from plastic botlles

Recycling and plastic waste is a major problem in the developing countries. I found interesting point of views and solutions for re-use of the material that we take granted for.

Sang Litrong Liwanag - one liter of light

The Story of Bottled Water, released on March 22, 2010 (World Water Day) employs the Story of Stuff style to tell the story of manufactured demand—how you get Americans to buy more than half a billion bottles of water every week when it already flows from the tap. Over five minutes, the film explores the bottled water industrys attacks on tap water and its use of seductive, environmental-themed advertising to cover up the mountains of plastic waste it produces. The film concludes with a call to take back the tap, not only by making a personal commitment to avoid bottled water, but by supporting investments in clean, available tap water for all.

Inspiring example how this common everyday material usually considered to be waste is solving a problem effectively and an sustainable way. A house build from plastic bottles filled with sand in Sabon Yelwan village in Nigeria.

In Nigeria population with over 160 million people more than 3 million plastic bottles are consumed and thrown away every day. Costs of building a house from these 14 000 recycled plastic bottles is 1/4 of a one made from bricks or other commonly used building materials.
